"Funny School Times", Four Years ON

Orain dela lau urte...
Hace cuatro años...
Four years ago,
Julio Caro Baroja High School started its star project:
TheTrilingualism Project.
No doubt, it is one of the projects that has given a good reputation to our school in Getxo. It started by having one more lesson in English in 1º ESO - MET and a especial English Workshop: Drama Workshop. The following school year we opened another new exciting subject: T-COM. Later, Citizenship, Ph.E., Ethics and A.E. in English would take their place in the Trilingual Projects.
This is the fourth school year with MET. All courses in ESO have arranged special classes to improve the students' command of English .  But, in order to celebrate it, this morning, over 50 MET students have joined at the Assembly Hall to sing the song that gave name to the drama play they have performed for the last four years and which made their first début  by this time in December, 2011
Funny School Times.
Funny School Times will probably be performed for the last time tomorrow evening, at 19:00 p.m.
Students of 1º ESO - MET will close this first circle of our Trilingualism Project Drama Workshop.
Parents and friends are invited to enjoy the play performed by our wonderful school cast.

Congratulations to teachers and students!!!

Drama Workshop, an exciting dynamic class

If we were asked what our 1-ESO- Drama Workshop MET students have been doing during the school year 2013-2014, and if we were asked to summarise it in a single image, this could be the image:

Congratulations to all of them for their craziness and happiness, for the time shared together   in the English Drama Workshop.

Drama Workshop Performance

Students of 1º ESO-1 MET, who have the subject Drama Workshop, have just performed their first drama play in English. For many of them, it has  been their second language first experience on the stage. Their excitement was rewarded with a big clap from the audience.
In the following PPT we can see them in everyday classes.

MET Drama classes 2013-2014

The students usually take pictures of their classmates. In the next term, they will make an image project with all the pictures and materials created.

In these lines, we can see some videos of the performance: I have a dream, their first song, Back to school, Interview with a new teacher and the already “classical” song of the musical Like a Little Bird

Hannah Roscoe, the school British language assistant and a frequent visitor to their classes, recorded the images.

They finished the performance singing We wish you a Merry Christmas with a large audience of parents, relatives and friends.

Drama Workshop Performance.

As part of the Trilingualism Project, students of 1º ESO are producing their first play which will be presented on December 20th, only for families and friends. After a long term working in the  Drama Workshop they will say bye to 2012 by singing "We wish you a Merry Christmas" after the performance.
It will be the second language first experience on the stage for many of them. But they have been working hard; so, sure they will be rewarded with a big clap from the audience.

But what's the title of the play?

The  musical, which was created last year, has got new dialogues and sketches for a larger cast and crew.

Drama Workshop Second Year

Last year's Drama Workshop debutted at IES Julio Caro Baroja as a new subject, as part of  the Trilingualism Project.

School Year 2012-1013 is its second chance to be on.

Drama Workshop has helped our students to improve their learning of English in different ways: They feel more confident with their speaking, they prepare some projects which they have to defend and present, they perform for their families and friends, for their classmates and sometimes for other Secondary Schools.

The result has been really positive. The students feel great with the experience.

And here are the new fantastic cast  and crew for the  new times...

...ready for  exciting drama  experiences.

Trilingualism Project: Drama Workshop

IES Julio Caro Baroja is a reference public high school always involved in new projects. Their last one is called: Trilingualism Project. To do so, an enthusiastic staff and team of teachers are working hard by  using experience, new methodologies and the new technologies. Besides the normal classes supported by Eskola 2.0 Project, all the languages of the project  -Spanish, Basque and English- respond to a special treatment to improve their learning. The English Department thought that Drama could be a good way of helping our students of 1º ESO to break some barriers that very often restrain students from speaking a second language.
In the following power point we show the way we work in the teaching periods. Most of the pictures were taken by the students during the Drama classes.

Betting our bottom euro on Drama Workshop & Trilingualism

Our Trilingualism Project is on. Sudents of Drama Workshop of 1º ESO have done it great. It's been a special school year for them in many aspects. As their 'drama anthem' says 'when learning is a pleasure, school, teachers and students are great'.  Shortly, a variety of videos will appear in our blog. To begin with, here is their presentation on their first day last September.

Funny School Times-2 at IES Mungia

Yes, they are waiting at the bus stop, not for the bus but for the coach that will take them to perform Funny School Times - 2 at IES Mungia.

Once there, they were warmly welcome by teachers and students of ESO-1 belonging to the Trilingual Project. Our Drama actors are gaining experience in the art of performing and little by little become the king of the stage.

They convinced their audience, who gave them a clap on the back. After the performance they met new friends and swapped stories and... their 'Tuenti'.

When a teacher lives up to his reputation

LUCAS

Lucas has been our English language assistant for a year.  Students have had full confidence in him since the very first day in class. Lucas is a nice easy-going  hard-working imaginative young man who always does the best of himself. Don’t ask him for anything; you can take for granted he’ll do it.

Students appreciate his power points, his youtube videos, his recordings of our Drama performances, the stories about his own young life, his smile and his sense of humour. His warm calm voice often helps  active and hyperactive students keep in calm when they become so excited at the end of the day.

What is he like?

Don’t look for descriptive words: watch him!

However, the end of the school year is coming and Lucas is leaving.  But don’t get in pain, because the students and the English Department will never forget such a good future colleague, such a good clever person, in the true sense of the word. And who knows? Maybe we’ll see him again at school… next year.

Drama Workshop

Our Drama Workshop in 1ª ESO goes on working hard and performing successfully. At the end of the second term they presented FUNNY SCHOOL TIMES - 2.

After Funny School Times -1, the students felt a bit bored in class and decided to change things and live more intensively at school. First, they imagined a "free trip" by train,

then they gave birth to an urban legend on the stage

and finally they told a witty African story.

Food for thought.

But a big surprise came to the audience when, as a summary of all the things seen, thought and imagined, the function ended with a musical of six original songs:

The audience clapped their hands in delight, proud of these young English speaking actors.

Auxiliares de Inglés Program

This year at Julio Caro Baroja we have an American asistant to help in our Conversation and Culture aspects of our Enlgish Program.

His name is Lucas Rincon.  He is from Los Angeles, California.  In California he was studying film and has now put his studies on hold to be with us here in our Institute.  As he is a Los Angeles native and has studied the arts of film and has experience in that area, he has been able to fit right in with Juan Carlos Martinez and our Drama in English Project.

Lucas Rincon - Auxiliar de Inglés

Lucas has been able to share his experiences with our students and organize drama warm up activities as well as creating small dialogues and other fun excercises.

Drama in 1º ESO

Here at Julio Caro Baroja we are pushing the envelope. We want to bring the learning experience to our students in as many forums as possible. One of our current paths is through the expressive form of DRAMA.

This would not be possible without an incredible staff of teaching, and especially our head of the Drama in English Project: Juan Carlos Martínez.

Funny School Times Show

Here we have one of the plays that our students in 1º ESO prepared and performed this year.
