They are here to stay

Time has come to make things come true.

Yes, seventeen students from Garbsen (Germany) are here to stay with us for a week to carry out the first part of our European Projects.
After a long flight trip they landed in Bilbao Airport. They were taken to our school to meet their partners.

Today after the Principal's reception they introduced one another in pairs.
Later they made a short trip to visit Gernika,

 Mundaka,
  Bermeo and Butrón.

Once in Getxo, they felt excited to talk about their first experience in
The Basque Country.

Drama Workshop Second Year

Last year's Drama Workshop debutted at IES Julio Caro Baroja as a new subject, as part of  the Trilingualism Project.

School Year 2012-1013 is its second chance to be on.

Drama Workshop has helped our students to improve their learning of English in different ways: They feel more confident with their speaking, they prepare some projects which they have to defend and present, they perform for their families and friends, for their classmates and sometimes for other Secondary Schools.

The result has been really positive. The students feel great with the experience.

And here are the new fantastic cast  and crew for the  new times...

...ready for  exciting drama  experiences.

Last Rehearsal

Comenius Project students have had their last workingday, after classes, to get tasks ready. It's been their last Wednesday. In five days, on November 12th,  17 German students and two German teachers are arriving to take part in this European Student Exchange which will be completed in Garbsen with students of four-five European countries in March.

Every group has prepared their task  according to their topic:
National Identity .

Finally, all of them have made a rehearsal to check that everything works OK.

As they have to present it before an important audience, they have been advised about how to stand up, how to move around, sign the dashboard, look people in the eye, speak calmly and aloud, etc. etc.

Everybody feels ready and excited to have a great time with new great life experiences.
 New adventures are always welcome.

National & European Landmarks - 2

In order to prepare the presentations for the Germans who are coming to visit us next month, every Wednesday our students meet at the computer room after class.

They have been interviewing five people from at least three different generations about the topic National Identity, as part of the Project National and European Landmarks. They have asked five questions and now, as we can see in the pictures, they are collecting that information to be digitally treated.

Some of them will prepare a Timeline for the historical events; others will make Glogsters as digital posters, Power Points, Mind Maps, etc.  to present their survey.

Finally, together with the German students they will come to a decision about what we have in common and what our differences are.

European Projects, 2012-2013

Once again, IES Julio Caro Baroja High School is involved in European Projects through Comenius.
Two meetings are being held this year.

A group of 17 German teens are coming to Getxo together with two teachers from Nov. 12th to Nov. 18th.. Once here, they will live with our  students'  families. They will visit Getxo, Bilbao and some emblematic places in The Basque Country. They will also be working with our students in the mornings  exchanging ideas and experiences, creating materials and presenting "National and European Landmarks -2".

In March, 2013 our students will go to Garbsen, a small town near Hannover, and meet students from Hungary, Poland, France and Germany. There they will try and make out what we all have in common and what we want to have in common.

In the following pictures we can see the students who will take part in the exchange and their first day working together.

Scituate - Getxo Student Exchange

If an image is worth more than a thousand words, here is the image of the student exchange for 15 days in Scituate (MA) USA.

Our words may sound strange in our changing world; but, everything, everything was perfect: the students, the friends, the teachers, the chaperones,  the American families,  the experience, even the weather.
 Congratulations to everybody!

The Last Party: Coming back home

After visiting Harvard,

our students spent their last day shopping in an extraordinary shopping center where not being a shopaholic or even being a non-shopper, nobody dares not buy anything.

Throughout our visit, all host families have been incredibly gracious. On the last evening, one of these extraordinary families offered our students a Farewell Party. In the warmest atmosphere, on a beautiful late summer evening, they gave us another unforgetable party where memories, good feelings, and plans for the future were the leiv motiv of the party.

The ending of the exchange has come. Lots of memories remain there in Scituate...

...and lots of them have come back  home with them
